As part of Ekta’s continued support for bad-ass technology, Ekta is proud to announce a new sponsorship with Vincent “Redpoint” Miller, a nationally ranked pilot in the MultiGP Drone Racing League.
Drone racing is a burgeoning and highly competitive sport where pilots control camera-equipped drones (in this case four-bladed quadcoptors) through controllers and head-mounted goggles that offer first person views (FPV) of their drones in flight as they race laps against several other flyers through a series of small gates. The races are quick, intense, and live-streamed to thousands of viewers who have a first-person view of each drone during the race.
We kicked off our sponsorship with Redpoint at the MultiGP Drone Racing Championship on February 7th in Las Vegas, Nevada. With hundreds of participants and thousands of viewers, this was a perfect place for our pilot, decked out in purple Ekta gear and sporting a quadcoptor with bright “Ektapurple” propellers, to launch our campaign. The top three winners of this race would be awarded a large cash prize ($75,000 for the winner) as well as a contract for the 18-person Drone Racing League, a highly televised drone league made up of the 18 best flyers in the world.
The inaugural race didn’t go quite as planned, however, as video problems with race-supplied equipment caused a wipeout in two of the three heats. Due to their equipment failure, race organizers allowed Redpoint a rerun, and Repoint was able to finish strong. In his third and final race, Redpoint was hit by another drone (“mid-aired”), crashing his drone and ending his day early. The final tally was two DNFs (Did Not Finish) and one finish with a strong time. While not the finish we were looking for, we’re excited to begin our first full season in May, and look forward to a fruitful partnership. Check back for updates on upcoming races and events!
